I've just bought my first pair of road shoes, they are Shimano SPD-SL (it says on the sole. Will these work with any pedals/cleats or just Shimano? Thinking about trying Time iclic if they work with them.

I dont think they will. The cleats (look and shimano) look identical with their 3 bolt attacment but IIRC you wont even be able to clip in.

I only have the shoes - I mean will I be able to fit the Time cleats to them to use the iclic pedals?

You will be OK with the Time I-clic pedals. They use the same 3 bolt Look fixing as SPD-SL.

Sorry, yes I thought you meant you had shoes, spd slcleats and wouldit fit a look pedal. The shoes to a large extent are irrelevant, look cleats fit look pedals, and look cleats will fit on the 3 holed shoe.

Yes. Shoes are pretty 'universal' these days - you can fit almost any cleat to them.

If you buy Time pedals they will come with cleats that will fit straight on to your Shimano shoes.

Not necessarily true I am afraid. I am sending a pair of Mavic Zxellium shoes and MAvic Race SL Ti pedals back to Mavic as they dont seem to be compatible. I know it sounds crazy as they are made by the same company but mine dont fit together. Then I went and got a set of Speedplay pedals which arrived last week and my Mavic Zxellium are not compatible according to the Speedplay website. Banging my head off the wall for the last week.
Mavic Shoes and Pedals a combined £450
    Then Speedplay Pedals £160
I didnt think there would be any problems with any of there at the cost but there you go.
