Bike borrowing etiquette

I would have cleaned it and given it a bit of a service before returning, if anything needed fettling.
But to receive a dirty bike? - really nothing to get worked up about.
Buckled wheel or damaged items - ripped bar tape, scuffed levers or rear mech or saddle - that would be rather careless and I would be annoyed.
If anything had to be replaced as a result of his use / carelessness then I'd expect him to cover the cost.
Otherwise- as you say - get back the karma by beasting him on the next hillCommute: Langster -Singlecross - Brompton S2-LX

I'm in the 'give it back at least as nice as you were lent it' camp.
FWIW, I'm the scruffiest bugger known to humanity: never iron anything, hair like my glance should turn people to stone, bike with a manky chain and with various bits held together by araldite/wire/duck tape.
BUT those are *my things*. If I use somebody else's stuff (er, not their hair...) it's a case of "their stuff, their rules". If the borrower can't abide by that, they're at liberty not to borrow. Hell, it's not OTT to show appreciation for the favour by returning things *nicer* than they were lent.
Oh yeah and the 2 bottles of wine are besides the point--they're for *the favour of lending*, not justification for leaving the thing in a state. Otherwise by that logic it would be fine to bring the bike back totally seized, flat tyres etc. and say "but I brought you caviar".0 -

I'd expect it back the way I lent it out. That said it's no biggie. How did gel get on the the top tube? Isn't it supposed to go in your mouth? I am curious about the stickers though.http://twitter.com/mgalex

Unfortunately that says it all and it really is a case of let the lender beware.
I don't think you can have any complaints as to how it turned out.
