Mostly the elderly we have to be wary of. My Gran really wilted when it got hot, and she found it quite difficult to breath. If you have any elderly friends or relatives be sure to check they're okay.

I'll be checking on Flasheart, he's nearly 50 you know

    In fairness...

reading heat magazine is a worry...

you wouldn't want to go down that dark and twisty path....

you don't reach rock bottom until you know what kerry catona had for breakfast and then it really hits you....

the only way back is to cancel the cosmo subscription..

    :D:D

Mmmmm, currently 14° and raining here, & the forecast doesn't look a lot better for the weekend. So like most headlines, I'll assume that "UK" translates as "south-east England"

Yep it's for the elderly really. Take a look at what happened in France a few years ago when they had a severe heat wave. Hundreds if not thousands of elderly people died. Same goes for the extreme cold.

Even so, you don't want to have a bad dose of heatstroke yourself. I'd say you've gotta be a bit dim to get it bad though i.e. laying in the sun for hours with no protection and not drinking enough water (couldn't think of anything more boring personally).

it's good that your gran is still knocking out 90 mile training rides at her age.....especially in this weather....

Yeah she does fantastically well for a dead lady.

Also worth keeping an eye on babies, people who are ill, and that twit at the bottom of your street using a hosepipe - report him! Do it!
  • I'm sure glad the met office are on the ball with this.

As usual, I was going to go to bed tonight with all the windows locked, central heating at maximum, hot water bottle, wearing all the clothes I own, and a heavy winter duvet...

Not any more though. Thankfully I've received the met office warning of certain impending being-uncomfortably-warm-in-bed-related doom.

Phew, that was a close one.

Although personally I'd prefer health advice from someone medically trained, not people who measure clouds and stuff :-)

As far as I can tell, the warning is of high temepratures in the outdoor environment. I never ask my GP for a weather forecast, and what is that if it isn't one of those? Hopefullly, you don't have anyone elderly and susceptible to heat in your family to whom this warning would be useful for those caring for them. The again from your post I suspect you are of an age where no one exists over the age of 30...have a nice weekend too.

Maybe the workers at the met are all cyclists and trying to clear the roads for a big group ride / tanning session they have planned this weekend?

Where is all this going to end ffs...Mild day today with the chance of the odd spot of rain (in case one needs to do a risk assessment over the taking of an umbrella to work) warning?

What about posting something useful like "hey, feckwitz, it's summer. It is the same time every year and it can get a tad warm, you know"

I was just being deliberately and massively sarcastic earlier...

Of course I appreciate that it does no harm to remind people to be extra aware in these conditions - this combination of heat and humidity occurs so infrequently in this country, which is why it's potentially a serious problem

I'm surprised the Met Office has not advised against cycling due to certain death between 11AM and 4PM today too.

I'm elderly and in the Southeast. I'll be keeping cool by cycling on the shady side of the road wherever possible.

As the bottom of my street in not in the North West, I'm not sure who I should report him to. I rang my water company and said the man at the bottom of my street was using his hosepipe. Their response was get off the line you nutter

I don't think it's aimed at anyone with a modicum of intelligence, more at the chavs you see burnt to a crisp on an annual basis.

fossyant South Manchester that's about 10 miles above wolverhampton and derby isn't it? ( lines across the country)

Naah not the North need to be at least south of the Humber and that's pushing it.

In miles there is as much of England above as below therefore Manchester = Midlands.

Funnily enough, my Gran (also RIP) was the opposite: she felt the cold even when it definitely wasn't. My 'golden memory' of her 90th birthday--which was in late July--was her wearing several layers, heating on, windows closed...and my mum having to duck outside every 15 minutes so she didn't pass out...

As for the vast majority of the population: people who are likely to heed this kind of advice are probably already being sensible, the incipient Crispy-Fried-Chav (TM) probably doesn't follow weather forecasts. Like in a lot of things, it's the received but misplaced wisdom that all you need for people to 'do the right thing' is keep giving them information.
  • Actually, the temperature has suddenly shot up quite impressively this afternoon down in London. I went for a ride just before noon and the temperature was a gentle 17-18 degrees. But when I opened the front door just now the heat suddenly hit me - the temp had shot up by 12 degrees while I was watching the TdF.

Mind you, it's not the 31 degrees that was forecast, it seems to have topped-out at 30. Should I raise this discrepancy with Wiggle?

You should get trading standards involved, it is clearly not as advertised, if Friday is 31, and ended up being 30, that is totally wrong, it's 1 out.

Get wiggle done proper. Or at least try get your a refund for your day.
