Contador went to the Radioshack bus to give watches to his 2009 TDF teammates. It's a tradition (started by Lemond, BTW) to do this but what's weird is that he waited until today (a year later and on stage 5) to do this. Mind games of his own? Or just weird timing.

And Lance did not meet with him to get the watch. mind games or just not available?

Mischief by Contador, for sure, but pretty funny.

I had the misfortune of seeing "Planet Armstrong" earlier this afternoon, and Armstrong's interview outside the bus was priceless. He basically admitted that he refused to talk to Contador and hid in the back of bus. I guess it's difficult not to come across as a bad loser when you really are a bad loser.

The possibilities are endless. Maybe AC is a bit nervous about being around LA? Or
vice versa? Maybe it's only just the way things happened to turn out? Maybe, maybe, maybe, what if, what if. :? :? :? :?

And what's funny is in the media Lance said all the right things: it's so nice of him to give those watches, it means he recognizes our support, etc. But I'll bet behind closed doors, his thoughts on Contador offering them watches now probably was laced with a few swear words. :D

I like your use of the word "basically". I've always thought you either admitted something or you didn't. Not sure now your "basically" fits into all this other than you needed a word
to make what LA said sound like what you wanted him to say but, he didn't go as far as you thought he should.

Or maybe the people who make more of this than it actually was need to grow up.

You hate him, yet you can't stop watching him? Following his every move? His every word? How does that work for you? :? :?

Yeah the basically was unnecessary. Here's what I saw:

    http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/video/090 ... age-5.html

Armstrong: "I didn't speak to him. I was in the back of the bus. I didn't see him."

Now, considering we saw Contador going into the bus, I think it's fair to say for sure that Armstrong refused to speak to him. Unless the Radioshack bus is actually a TARDIS and Armstrong was in a different wing at the time...

I'll buy all of that. Guess if LA didn't want to speak to him he wouldn't have to. And vice versa. For whatever reason I'm not sure I buy all the talk of an actual big feud between the two of them. There's just too much tying them together and a lot can be said for the soap opera aspect of all this and the audience it generates. Nothing like a "bitter rivalry"
    to boost ratings.

I'm surprised someone hasn't claimed Lance would have been busy on transfusion when AC visited, it's as plausible as the theory that LA and co were dumping blood bags in ASO trash cans. The investigation re that kit they found in ASO bins has obviously ended and they haven't respect to admit it was headlines only...no substance! The media is happy breaking doping stories but not so fast to report no catch!

All of the other members received their gifts last year, they actually attended the celebration dinner that Astana put on at the end of the Tour, and Alberto presented them with their gifts atthat time.

Only two members of that team did not attend the banquet - they were too "busy". Armstrong and Bruyneel.

Contador had two expensive engraved watches to give them, he was not going to send them in the post.

He walked into their playpen, like a man, and presented them ( or tried to ) the gifts that they were too churlish to accept last year.

    Kudos to Alberto.

Yeah but he raced against Lance in the Criterium International earlier this year. Could have given it to him then.

True, but the gifts are for performance in the Tour de France. Had he given the gifts for TdF at any event other than the TdF you can only imagine the things that Armstrong and Bruyneel would say about it.

Contador is a tremendous talent, and is in a no-win position.

The media generally love Armstrong, at least more than they do Contador. Contador is like Indurain was, he comes to the events, he rides his bike while keeping his mouth shut, and after the event he goes home. And keeps his mouth shut.

No matter what he did with those watches - he will be criticized for it, and it all plays along the Armstrong script.

I think he did a classy thing, but that is what I expect of him based on what we have seen of him.
  • I have to admit the whole Lance/Contador thing is making me really like Contador. I already like Vino, maybe it's time to get a full set of Astana kit in the post :D

    @donrhummy

Why do that when he could do it on a day with all the worlds media focused on it? If Armstrong is embarrassed about the fact he didn't turn up to Contadors party reflecting badly on his part then he only has himself to blame.

Now time to check Ebay for a brand new top of the range watch. :D

They should have taken their own beds. (One of Sky's better ideas, that one)

I think Quick Step are doing that too. Innergetic... former sponsor and mattress manufacturer.

What you have to understand is that in here there a hard core of say about a dozen posters who almost wet their pants every time a story comes up that they can spin in a pro AC anti LA kinda way. The same dozen btw who had no time for AC before LA made his comeback............kinda quaint in a strange way.
Gasping - but somehow still alive !
