Remember hearing something about riders wearing black socks instead of white to hide blood stains from doping.

    Yes, the black socks hide the needle marks.

    And they also make you look like a dork. With black socks and and a Paul Weller hair cut, Wiggo looks like someone out of a Radioshack commercial.

    Black cycling socks are very useful... for commuting. No need to change into work socks after arriving at the office. As for the pros, the colour of socks means absolutely nothing. White socks do have a tendancy of looking mucky quickly, so I can see why some might choose to avoid them.

    FFS. I wear black socks. I haven't owned a pair of white sock since I was a teenager.

    I have never been too fussed about conforming so no biggy. However, even if we are to conform to stereotypes how the f*** can black socks not go with white shoes???

    Black and white go together in any combination or array you bleedin well fancy. Theres preconceptions and then there's brainwashed.

    Just to clarify, I don't think it's true at all. I thought it was a ridiculous idea- about as ridiculous as motorised bikes!

    I was interested to see what everyone else though, and in the poll (so far) 6 people have said Yes. So go shoot them, not me. Cheers

    The story emerged as something which was going to appear in the WSJ article, but it didn't make the final cut.

    I'm not clear there is a vein you could use for a transfusion near your foot, but if there is it's not completely outlandish. After all, riders have tattoos to hide needle marks.

    bandages are much better at hiding needle marks. So, everyone who crashed in the first couple of stages is clearly a doper....
