Shortening XT Hose without the vise attachment

Just got a new pair of XT M756 brakes but the rear hose is 1700mm & I need about 1300mm. I've checked the guides on how to shorten the hose and have ordered a new olive & insert and I am happy to do it myself, but the brakes didn't come with the yellow piece of plastic to fix the hose in the vise. Any suggestions?
this is the thing I'm talking about

Could I make one out of cork?
Basically I don't want to pay another £15 for the spare hose kit I cannot find them for sale on their own
thanks

Not 100% what the block is used for but, then i did a hose shorten on my hope brakes a while back i just drilled a hole size of tubing in a matchbox sized bit of wood, then halfed it.
worked fine for the one time i used it.0
