I am new to cycling (got myself a ribble gran fondo on order) and have been looking into buying a pair of cycling shoes but have no idea where to start. I am looking to use the bike for training with some decent sized hills, mainly in summer. I am a uk size 11 in my normal shoes. My budget is up to £100.

I am looking for a bit of advice into what to get? I've looked at shimano R086, R105 and mavic avenir?

Forgot to mention I've purchased some Look Keo Max 2 Carbons so they would have to be compatible. Thanks

    They need to fit you.

For most shoes you need to go up a size, but you really need to try them on

Rich's advice is good. If they fit you, you can't really go wrong with a pair of Specialized (they are a little bit wider than other brands I've tried). I've got two for different purposes and they're both excellent

cheap specialized, or DHB from wiggle....

upgrade later IF you enjoy cycling, and keep the cheaper ones for bad weather etc.

don't go daft now! If you want to go daft, stop asking us and buy what fits and you like.

Shimano shoes offer good value for money. I have just got a pair of R105 with carbon soles for £80 something quid.

If you find yourself walking just small amounts with cycling shoes they will wear and scuff quickly. As such, they can be a bit of a false economy.

I picked up a pair of Shimano R086's from Fat Birds Don't Fly for £58 - they have loads of stuff at 20-30% off RRP.

    +1 on the sizing though - I usually take a 44 but a 45 in the Shimano's fits fine.

I've got the Keo 2 Max pedals, and they work very well with my Sidi Energy shoes. What matters is that you go and try out different shoes and see what's comfortable. I can't emphasise how important it is. Happy Riding

See thats not always the case, I take an 11 (46) and the SHimano 46 fits me perfect, guess I am lucky, people have fifferent SHAPED feet aswel as sizes so trying on is really a must, once done you can then order over the internet and save some cash as I do now

Pretty much any show will be compatible with the Keos as others have said try them on. Along with saddles they are the things that are most personal to a rider and what works for one might not suit another. I know it doesn't sound helpful but it really is the best advice. Far better to spend a few extra quid to buy from a LBS than to take a chance with an online bargain.
  • Thanks for all the advice I ended up going with Shimano R132's after trying on a few pairs. I'm really pleased with them glad I got a pair with a rachet strap.
