According to Danilo Hondo, in order for Petacchi to defeat Cavendish, Lampre intentionally lifted the pace farther out from the finish than normal, 4 km or so, forcing Columbia to ride hard earlier than they normally would have chosen to get to the front and stay there, and thus eventually not having the legs to properly control and to lead Cavendish out.
Apparently Hondo’s little break forward on the other side of the road about 1.25 km before the finish was also part of this plan and intended to break up the Columbia train (which it did).0 -

They got played - but it was about time somebody crushed super-team trains rather then sit behind in the pack watching it all happen.The British Empire never died, it just moved to the Velodrome0
