Sorry, I need some more help please

Where are my stabilisers?

It's gears again - I just can't seem to follow instructions
I've put an X0 rear mech and shifter on my bike (new cable) and at first the lever felt tight when trying to shift down the gears and it wouldn't shift into the lowest gear at all. Then I fiddled some more and now, it's all over the place!
How do I do it properly? What I did was...
Put it in the highest gear front and rear
Set the H limit screw
Put it in the lowest gear front and rear (I had to move the chain myself to get it in the lowest on the cassette)
Tried to set the L limit, but the screw wouldn't move the mech over enough to line up properly and when I turned the pedals, the chain went back on to the 2nd cog.
Then I went to Tesco.
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Where does the b screw come into it all? Is the cable too tight? I also just read a thread about not having enough of a loop of outer cable going into the mech - I chopped some off mine today because it looked too long for this mech and the cable was cut for a Deore mech.
Any help much appreciated

No, that's what I did - High gear (smallest sprocket ) = H screw and L for the lowest (biggest sprocket). That's right isn't it?
So which chainring should I have the chain in when I'm setting up the rear? I put it in the big one when I set up the highest gear so that the chain wouldn't get messed up in the front mech - I thought it mattered :oops:http://i556.photobucket.com/albums/ss9/ ... lurLT2.jpg

Ahh, just leave it in the middle front. You can set the H screw without any cable tension as the mech will shift to the small sprocket by default, then adjust the screw until its lines up. Then tension the cable and shift to big sprocket and set the L screw.
Make sure the cable and outer is all seated in the cable stops neatly and there are no overly long loops to the rear mech.0 -
No, just food... but I'm off to the pub for beer in about 5 mins and hopefully in the morning i'll have a moment of clarity and be able to fix my bloody bike!
