Drivetrain Help

Bought my bike second-hand and it has an array of mis-matched parts. Anyway my dilemma is it has Campagnolo Xenon 9 speed shifters, not sure what front mech, a compact chainring, a Shimano RD TY-18 rear mech, 7 speed Shimano Cassette and god knows what chain. The shifting on it is poor for obvious reasons. So which is the easiest route to rectify the problem and my shifters need replacing anyway as one has snapped

the easiest route is to toss it into a handy skip. :arrow:0

Thanks for such helpful advice0

See if you can pick up a cheap groupset on ebay - people are always upgrading.
Providing the frame is OK and worth keeping. Otherwise the skip advice is fairly sound.0 -
Well it sounds as though the biggest problem is the mismatched shifters and rear mech; shifters are cheaper than derailleurs so I'd replace those, especially since one's broken anyway. Everything else I'd clean and lubricate and see how it goes (but don't use WD-40 or degreaser on the cassette!).
If the cassette is 7-speed it's probably a screw-on freewheel, not strictly a cassette. If you want indexing and combined brake levers/shifters as opposed to downtube or bar-end shifters your choice is a bit limited, but there's some good advice here:

I reckon that the chances are it is a cassette. 5 or 6 speed would more likely be a freewheel.
Either is possible but there are a heck of a lot of Shimano 7 speed cassette freehubs spinning on the roads. Easy to spot the difference without removing the wheel. The Shimano freewheel has a ring with two holes in surrounding the axle locknuts:

The cassette freehub has a lockring.0 -
You're right, could be either; freewheel guess was because there are a lot of these even on new bikes (especially cheaper commuters/hybrids): http://www.amazon.com/Shimano-HG37-7-Sp ... d_sbs_sg_2
Shouldn't make any difference to the shifting though, am I right?"We're not holding up traffic. We are traffic."0 -
Change the shifters and renew the cable inners and outers at the same time. You'll be looking for a pair of these or something similar, but 7 speed STIs are not very common these days.
Derailleurs should be OK, if the cassette/freewheel and chain are not too badly worn then give 'em a clean and a lube and they should be fine.
EDIT: Chainreaction Cycles have 7 speed Sora right hand shifters in stock so that's probably your best bet. Which shifter is broken?- - - - - - - - - -

Shouldn't indeed. Spacing is the same for 7 speed freewheel or cassette. Just how it performs with Campy ergo 9 speed shifters, I'm not sure!0 -

No need to use Campag Ergos. I have some Shimano 7sp STIs that the OP can have for a very competetive price!Ben
