Bike Rescue (or what to do with an old Scott AFD309)

Hi,
I have a dilemma that I've been wrestling with and I was hoping that the forum members would be able to help me with.
I've been the owner of a ScottUSA AFD309 road bike for a decade now and it's in need of some love. In particular the triple shifter is dead and needs replaced.
In addition, I have long wanted to move from a triple to a compact double as the triple chainset has given me the blues the whole time I've owned the bike. At this point, with the work to do, I'm looking at purchasing a groupset.
Not only that, but the wheels are still the original Mavic rims on Ritchey hubs and are a bit old and bent - I don't know if I could get them trued again, or whether I really need to purchase new ones.
Anyway, this leaves me with heaps of options, of which I see no clear winner. These are:
* Purchase a new groupset and wheels - Tiagra groupset £250 + £120 handmade wheels, total cost £370. I've been told the Tiagra groupset isn't that great, but the jump up to Campag Veloce puts the total cost to £470 which is new bike territory.
* Purchase a new groupset and get the wheels fixed - Is this a viable option?
* Stop moaning about the triple and buy a left hand shifter on it's own and just ride the bike. - This is the cheapest option, but I think I would be unhappy about keeping the triple chainset. It would let me ride while I saved up for something better though.
* Fit the triple shifter and sell the bike (with bent wheels?) and then save up to buy a new bike - could be a period of no riding.
* Buy a new bike. A Ribble 7005 winter framed special will put be back £570. - My issues with getting a new bike is that I'm just trading like for like. The AFD309 is a 7005 frame and to get a bike with a better frame, I guess I have to spend more like a £1000. So what's the point of chucking my frame away?
Ideally, I'm looking to get the best value option here, but I don't want to buy a new bike for the sake of it. As you might be able to tell, I'm a bit confused over the whole thing.
I, myself am a very amateur rider that doesn't do competitions. I just love riding the bike for short quick blasts. It's my only road bike (I have a commuter for work) so it gets both summer and winter treatment. I guess a bike that could take guards would be a bonus, but I've ridden without them in all weathers.
Wow, long post. If you've reached the end, thanks very much! I'd really love to know your opinions.
