Removing Campag. Derailleur Cages

Longish story, but here goes:

I managed to break the rear derailleur on my winter bike (campag xenon - long cage) - the bottom sprocket fell out on a ride, and I couldn't find all the bits. Instead of buying a replacement sprocket, I decided to upgrade and buy a new Veloce mech. However, stupidly I ordered a short cage one, fitted it and have now discovered that it doesn't work with a triple. I can't send the mech back so I have two options:

1. Use the parts from the new Veloce mech to repair the old Xenon one. Simple to do, but no Veloce upgrade.

2. Remove the long 'cage' from the xenon and use it to replace the short cage on the veloce mech.

I'd rather do option 2 as it'll mean that I'll effectively have a Veloce mech rather than a Xenon one, but I don't know if it's possible. Is there a way of removing the cages from the campag mech... the inner arm of the cage appears to be rivetted to the derailleur body. Any help or advice greatly received.

I had one of them red bikes but I don't any more. Sad face.

Download the spares manual from the Campagnolo website - the rear cage pivot on many is held by a circlip
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • Might not be as straightforward as you think. It's easy to dismantle the cage. Take out jockey wheels with small Allen key and then you're left with the inner cage plate stuck to the derailleur body. These will come apart by poking a 5mm Allen Key inside the bolt. HOWEVER, I've discovered that the bolts aren't always compatible between groups, so it might not be as straightforward replacing one with t'other.

My advice would be to flog the new Veloce mech at a slight loss, and get hold of another. Maybe even a second hand Centaur?

My story. I mashed up my Chorus cage plates (by not putting the wheel in the dropout properly..) so got hold of a cheap Xenon long cage. Thinking that it would be easy to put the long cage on the Chorus body until I could afford a new mech. Basically, it wasn't straightforward, so I'm just running the lazy-shifting Xenon for the time being.

Spoke to Mercian about getting replacement cage-plates but these are £60 a pair. A rip-off which effectively forces you to buy a new derailleur or source a decent second-hand one.

Edit: Had a look at the Xenon, and yes you're right. The cage does appear to be rivetted (hence not able to poke in said 5mm Allen key) which is why I gave up trying to swap them too!

Cheers guys... looks like I'll be flogging the Veloce derailleur. Anyone want to make me an offer?
