Which Aero Wheels for me?

Looking to get some areo wheels.

Was thinking about Mavic Cosmic Carbones, but wandered how these compared to other wheels, such as ZIPP, FF, Fulcrum?

Obviously i want something that is going to be robust. Clinchers. Preferbaly alloy rim, so i done have to change brake pads.

ZIPP's dont come with Aero spokes do they? So does that make them less efficiant than Aero Wheels with Aero Spokes.

Also the reason for wanting Aero Wheels is that i seem to have reached terminal velocity of 38mph and i want to go faster. Will aero wheels help with this? Will they help me hold a high speed for longer?

  • Cue everyone recomending the wheels they have ..

Well i am biased because I just dropped £1050 on them but i have a Hed Jet 6/9 wheelset which are superb.

they're clinchers with an alloy rim. and they do seem to make going faster slightly easier, yes i'll repeat that; they dont make you fast but they make going faster slightly easier, you have to ride them to experience the difference, and it isnt like someone flicking a switch, but you can feel it when you take them off (reluctantly because rain is forecast in my case). the wide c2 rim also seems to make a difference to the feel of the wheels, outstanding cornering grip which gives you confidence to throw them into corners.

get the ones you like the look of and ride them every day feeling like a hero even if they dont make you any faster.

you might manage a new max of 38.5 mph, or up your average speed a bit over a certain distance, is that worth £750+, only you can decide.. .

I can do 50MPH+ with my regular, non-aero wheels with no special spokes. I just have to be going downhill.

I have Zipp 404's. Mine have aero spokes (but they are special). In the past I have used the Mavics you speak of as my daily training wheel and they were great. Zipps are more efficient than Mavic wheels no matter what spokes they use. It's all about the dimples. :)

Steel bladed spokes like used on ZIpps are the most aero. Fat bladed Aluminium alloy spokes are poor aerodynamically.

@ Poker Face: Carbones as daily training wheels? How did the hold up? Did they die eventualy because of pot holes? Or did you get good mileage out of them?

Once you get some aero wheels you'll be faster than a SR-71 Blackbird.

I use Bora Ones all the time this summer unless it rains but these have tubs. When I go back to Neutron Clinchers the bike feels a bit dull and lifeless. I have been in a pothole that would have severely buckled an alu wheel and wrecked the tyre, the Bora is unmarked but the tub was a write off. Clincher deep sections are just too heavy.

I use Sram S40's they are made by Zipp same shape but without dimples.
They also use different carbon so a good bit heavier but at a fraction of the cost.
