edited July 2010 in MTB general
I have a cracked frame and the manufacturer (who shal remain nameless at this point) has kindly sent a new frame.

New frame is a 2010 to replace my 2009, but the BB, seatpost and headset have changed spec and they are asking me to pay for these bits, as old ones will not fit.

Fell a bit peeved about that what do you lot think?

Thoughts appreciated.

You shouldn't be out of pocket really, but there's probably something in the fine print that says they have to replace the broken parts and not much else!

    what happened here...

did you take the bike to a shop who stripped it and sent the frame away? or did you send the whole bike back to someone?

how will the BB not fit? that doesn't make any sense?

Who is asking for the cash....direct distributor or a bike shop?

I sent photos of the damage and the manufacturer sent the frame to the shop and I have taken my bike to the shop for the frame swap.

my bike has hollotech 2 and the new one is bb30, headset size has changed as has the seatpost.

shop is asking for the cash.

AFAIK, the shop needs to MTFU and get the stuff fitted to give you a bike that works....they should then claim any cost back form the manufacturer.

again...not 100% on this...but sounds like the shop are at it. phone the manufacturer/distributor direct and get their stance...also try not to give them too many details of who you or the shop are....just get more info from them...then relate that to the shop.

remember though...loud voices and swearing will not help your cause at all. friendly and polite at all times.

and i know what make of bike it is..

this is my main reason for never having anything to do with them...fsking proprietary tech that they call industry standard, when they are the only fskers that use it.

at least you have a couple of options on cranksets....

Sounds like the shop should be asking the manufacturer for the parts - or at least charging them, not you.

That said - if the manufacturer/distributor aren't playing ball, then you can understand the shop also being unwilling - but then they shouldn't be out of pocket either.

Is this the shop up the hill or the shop in the town centre near the rounabout?! :P

it's the one up the hill in the sticks, the one near the rbt in the town centre wanted £250 for a frame swap !

Like I say, the manufacturer should be providing you with the bits you need, but there may be something which says about spec changing blah blah blah.

The shop should certainly be doing a very good price on stuff though, and if you really wanted to, I'm sure you could kick up a fuss.

Frames to have gone BB30 lately, hmmm... Scott are the obvious one, but they've not changed headset or seatpost! Nor have Spesh.

Figured - well your in the best hands in Berkshire - so not much else you can do - I'd ask them to press the manufacturer to give you these bits for free - the whole point of a warranty job is that you shouldn't be out of pocket. But, as mentioned, there may be small print - in fact - there's almost certainly small print.

If you do go down the route of having to upgrade that kit, at least you should be able to sell on the redundant kit to soften the blow somewhat?

Is it a brand they normally stock, or did you just nominate a bike shop for the manufacturer to send the new frame on to?

Yes normally stocked, you are right I know they are a good shop and have no complaints with them just the situation of having to buy 3/4 new components because they changed the spec of the new model.

Yeah, sounds like time to talk nicely and ask them to speak with the manufacturer on your behalf - then if you don't get anywhere, then it's time to re-assess your approach.

Certainly no need to go in all guns blazing (doesn't sound like you're going to be doing that anyway!)

Best of luck - let us know how you get on.

    I'm guessing specialised or Lappierre?
And agree with the others, get in touch with the main distributors or manufacturers, and get their stance on the matter.

You should not have to pay a penny - the shop is obligated to return the frame in full working order, fully compatible, and if not, recompense you ie new parts etc.

Excellent thankyou, nice to get a definitive answer, I will put that across to the shop and then the manufacturer if they are unable to sort it out.

well good news, emailed shop who spoke to manufacturer and apparently there was a mix-up at the manufacturers end having spolen to two seperate people.

So new bits are on there way FOC, all good news, thanks for your help with this, have to say that the manufacturer was quick to send the frame, will reveal the manufacturer name once it's all done and dusted.

sounds like the shop were at it to me....they know their warranty obligations full and well...but chanced their arm on the off chance you would stump up the cash!

Yes the thought did cross my mind, but feel I should give people the benfit of the doubt and they do seem genuine but who knows.

Have still yet to deal with any MTB shop without something going wrong, more noticably the big chain corporates in terms of consistency, but one particlular LBS are at the top of my offenders list, it's a funny industry this with a lot of scammers involved and very hard to find a shop that is totally honest as well as good at what they do !

    Which is a shame.

    hah...

I'm not saying I would have done it differently if I was the shop.... :D

but you are right...they all seem to make the chips fall in their favour!
