for all those who may want to buy helicopter tape in the near future :
was in Wickes DIY and noticed they sell rolls of window repair tape, which appears identical to copter tape , £4-5 for a 20mtr roll.
only comes in 2 inch width but a fraction of the cost from bike accessory outlets and enough cover cover several bikes completely.
hope this is of use.

Except the tape is not very hard and it can get ripped and cables can rub through it

When it's been damaged and you come to remove it, the glue is really tacky and it takes a whole can of wd40 and hours of elbow grease to remove the glue that ramains after the tape has gone. (guess what I spent Sunday doing)

IMHO It's sold for fixing roof sheets and thats the best place for it.

Helicopter tape is used to protect the tips of helicopter blades, hence the name.
It's quite a bit tougher than window repairing... well, anything.
