Does the same coverage also go to the US?
Their obsession with Armstrong is ridiculous. I accept he's a massive name in the sport
and even still a contender, but they're so over the top !!!0 -
What's a ' hurpin'? :?'Google can bring back a hundred thousand answers. A librarian can bring you back the right one.'
Neil Gaiman0 -
It's what Sherwin uses to fix his hur to his head0

It's funny but if you see/hear a clip from Sherwen's first few years of commentary with Liggett, Sherwen sounds properly northern. It's like he's a different person. It's a shame, but their commentary hasn't grown with me. In 1985 when Phil did a preview/highlights for World of Sport he was at my level. Now he's still stuck explaining it to people new to the sport 25 years on. He doesn't seem frustrated by it though. I'm frustrated with him and his cliche-o-matic style.
Which is why I mix and match with Eurosport and enjoy Imlach's segments. Anything but Sherwen and bloody Liggett.0 -

Horses for courses ain't it.
I personally find it is dumbed down beyond belief.
My Mrs (who has little/no intererst in cycling) thinks they're good/informative.
They are far slicker than the Eurosport team but would agree that the amount of coverage dedicated to LA is completely disproportionate.
Funny how the 'Blood Brothers' WSJ story was covered through very gritted teeth.0 -
not listened to Phil and Paul for a few years due to it being the US commentary that comes to us.
I think there are some sections when the US are on a break where they just to commentary aimed at ITV4 and whoever else may take their feed.
The problem is a main viewers in the US aren't watching the tour but LA so that is what they have to concentrate on.
I had a problem with the giro last year too where it seemed every stage the camera was just on LA as if he was the only rider in the race0 -
I can't listen to Phil and Paul now although I loved them on Channel 4 when I first discovered the TdF. Harmon and Kelly are generally very good . Harmon makes the odd mistake and occasionally rambles on about architecture or something . Kelly takes a little bit of getting used to but his knowledge of racing and tactics makes up for anything else . Carlton Kirby , why ?The UCI are Clowns and Fools0

I always think of these two when I hear Phil and Paul:
I like listening to Phil Ligett's voice though... reminds me of the tours from the '80's when I first started enjoying the cycling.0 -

so when you didnt understand the commentary it was ok to be aimed at newcomers to the sport - but now the commentators should follow your knowledge level?0 -
I don't think it's so much the newcomer/old timer thing, it's that they've become parodies of themselves. John Motson ended up the same. Although the Lance-love adds a different dimension.0

Lance who?????????????0

At least you have an option. Versus is all we have. Universal sports carries the Giro and the Vuelta, so there is a repreive from the Lance show then.
Versus has also been showing a Lance special between rebroadcasts of the Tour nearly nonstop. I can imagine that next year they're going to put have to put a digitized Lance in the peloton to show us where he would be if he was racing so Paul and Phil will have something to talk about.0 -
I don't think you'll find a better commentator in the sport of professional bike racing! (If I have to hear him say that one more time, I'm going to take a hammer to my TV).
For live stages I think Eurosport's coverage is light years ahead. I quite like the ITV4 hour long highlights, and generally at the end of a stage I prefer to flip over to see Imlach and Boardman. The guys that Eurosport have in the studio are dreadful. Some of the ex-cyclists they have are ok, but the bald guy with the beard who interviews them is absolutely dreadful. He sometimes leaves me wondering if he's ever watched a bike race in his life, never mind the stage that's just finished.0 -

Can only agree with TakeTheHighRoad. Sherwen's barnet is quite surreal. Not, I suspect, a syrup but at least three tins of Cherry Blossom boot polish. Ill conceived, to say the least.0

I think you guys are making way too much of this commentary thing. Watch any sport and
I think you'll hear the names of the "big guns" way too many times, right along with the usual heaps of praises. H*ll, the summer Olympics didn't really last all that long and I still got sick of hearing about Michael Phelps. Just turn the sound off if you don't think the announcers are telling you anything worthwhile.0 -

Dennis, it could just be the standard in the US.**************************************************

why don't hey just go silent for a few minutes here and there when nothing is happening? I wouldn't mind and the over exaggeration at times by them..god, ...would people whinge though if they behaved like normal viewers?0

I always watch Eurosport. The only dislike is the Tyler advert for Garmin Transitions - we had it for every break during the Giro and it's followed us to the Tour!! It's brain washing.T Farr0

Well, I will admit to not watching all that much of foreign sports programing(non U.S. based). Not much available over here and I'm trying to cut back on watching the tube anyway.0
