Clicking/fringing noise when applying power to the crank

Got a problem with a loud clicking noise when I lean on the peddles. It's recently turned more into a grinding noise so I need to do something about it. Sounds like it's coming from the BB although could be the spd cleats. Any advice on things to check or tests to isolate the problem?
