Don't let the distance put you off.
I don't know what sort of bike you have, but if it's upto it, get the train from Glasgow QS to Edinburgh W (every 15mins or 1/2 hr), then it's 26miles each way. Head out on the A701/A703, they're not bad roads to ride on and it's not that far. Avoid Penicuik by going via Howgate/Auchendinny, then get back on the A703 at Leadburn and head to Glentress.
Innerleithen's worth a visit too!
If you don't fancy the ride back to Edinburgh you might be able to cadge a lift back with someone if you loiter about in the car park!
If you ask enough people - someone will take you back!

Sadly public transport to glentress is s**t, Peebles have actively banned all bikes from their buses It really is stupid. Best bet is to find some local riders who fancy car sharing, though obviously doesn't help with campingUncompromising extremist0

Or look at companies like Bike Bus
They, and others like them, do regular runs down to Glentress and the other Stanes from Glasgow and normally arent that expensive (although Bike Bus doesnt appear to be running at the moment).
Riding from Edinburgh is doable but the main routes down (A703) can be very busy with fast traffic during rush hour or on a sunny weeked and the alternative quiet routes are quite hilly. Depends on how fit you are and how confident you are in traffic.0
