For me it would be Wiggins ride - I had him nailed on top 5, but to lose a minute that's not a great start.

Armstrong went well but I think this was on the cards.

Wiggins rode in the wet. Had he a later or earlier time he'd have put on a few more seconds. probably not a lot but every bit helps.

He said on TV he wasn't too bothered...yeah right. I'm getting a pay freeze for the next 2 years, I ain't bothered as well :x

  • hang on everyone. on the ES pre race interview he said he was not targetting the prologue and this was the first tour hes gone into where he will hold back and sacrifice a possible stage win to be more consistant through the whole tour.

I notice that Menchov and Samu Sanchez got the same time as Wiggins, and Vande Velde was four seconds slower. I would have expected all of them to have done a bit better.

  • But considering Wiggins won the Giro prologue and always places well its not a good day for him, he has given his rivals 40 seconds.

Big difference between not giving everything for the win and finishing 76th, nearly a minute down in just 9km. Should have taken the later start option - at least he would have been guaranteed to have been racing in similar conditions to his competitors

agreed, if he's not going to make time on them in the TTs then where is he going to do it?

My thoughts exactly.I even thought at the time, when i heard wiggo was hoping to miss the (forcasted) later rain,by starting early...'he's taking a chance' & ...'should really start with the favourites'

I sincerely hope that I am wrong but this might be the Tour where Wiggos bubble will burst.
Andy Schleck might have gotten himself out of contention for a win also. It is of course early yet, but if that is his current TT-shape there will be trouble.
Other dissapointment, as mentioned: Menchoc and Sanchez.

Difficult to know what to make of yesterday's results though, conditions will have been wetter for some than others meaning they didnt push it as hard. Even with equal wetness, some people might also have been less willing to take risks for the sake of a few seconds.

As for Wiggins messing up with his time, hindsight is a wonderful thing. If he had got better conditions then he would have made time on most of the others. Just one of those things.

I don't think Wiggo's tour is over as if he climbs well like he did last year then he should top 10, but I can't help thinking he may have lost his chance of a podium today.

Then again the race may get mental in the next week and he may gain the yellow jersey after attacking in the Arenberg with Juan Antonio Flecha and gain a minute on everyboday......or maybe sky will repeat their synchronised crashing routine from the Giro and his tour really will be over!

    God I love this sport!

Cant help thinking that losing so much time on a 9k ride is a pretty bad way of achieving consistency over a three week race... Not targeting the prologue is one thing, not putting in a solid ride over so short a distance is another. It's not like he didn't target an Alpine stage in order to conserve energy, it's only 9k! Yes I know it's more about the preparation and when to peak in form, but looks like he's got a lot of room for improvement if he thinks he's going to build form over the race...

As much as I think some of the big names made a mistake by losing so much time in the prologue, if the Giro has taught us anything it's that anything can happen.

The next few days could rip the GC up if the weather plays havoc like it did in the Giro.
