<Sill question no. #505>

If I have a bike with a Campag rear derailleur.

Do I *have* to use a Campag cassette (on a Campag splined hub?)

Or, can I mix and match? So, Campag mech. with Shimano Cassette (on Shimano hubs?)

Much appreciated if anyone can tell me what the potential issues are (is it literally the shifting could be out?) and if its best to stick to the same manufacturer for all components etc.

Heaven forbid if they made them all interchangeable.

Thanks.

  • Shimano 8 speed hub/cassette will index fine with campag 8 speed ergos and 8/9speed rear mech

    Don't know about others

Ah, OK - thanks for the advice – mech. is a Campagnolo Mirage Rear Derailleur (9 Spd),

I use campag 9 spd shifters and rear changer on my winter bike, with a shimano 9 spd cassette - no problems.

Set the gear to align bang on with the middle sprocket on the cassette, and the upper and lower 4 sprockets arent so far out of indexing to make a difference.

Yeah, I tried Sheldon first, but found it a bit inconclusive.
  • Fair point, Sheldom says that 8 speed campag and shimano won't mix. Do you have any of the parts that you mention already? I'd trust SheffSimon as he is riding the setup you're asking about. Might be just that mixing and matching may take a little bit more careful setup and maintenance to run correctly

Try this http://www.wheelworks.co.nz/drivetrain.php. Also, I'm pretty sure I read somewhere else that Shimano 8 speed indexes perfectly with Campy 10 speed ergos. Obviously, only using 8 of the 10 positions.

There is also the JTEK Shifmate widget to fit on the rear mech to help mix and matxg most combinations of shifter/mech and cassette.
Recipe: shave legs sparingly, rub in embrocation and drizzle with freshly squeezed baby oil.
  • +1 on the Jtek Shiftmate.
Just matched up a pair of 9 speed Campag Chorus ergolevers with Shimano Ultegra rear mech and Shimano 9 speed cassette.
Shifting is good right the way across the cassette both upshifts and downshifts.
There are different models for various Campag/Shimano combos.

This page covers all the bases regarding mix-and-matching rear-shifting components:

Order it direct from USA and not from the UK seller.

It does work very well though. I think it is well worth the money
