In at the deep end - charity ride

Me and a friend have decided to pick up road biking and do a charity ride on a kind of spur-of-the-moment thing. I'm a (casual) mountain biker and work in a bike shop, he is not a cyclist but still pretty fit.

Basically I have a few queries on this sort of riding. Probably most important is the route for the ride. We're hoping to do it this year if possible, most likely in October half term, so we will have between whenever we get our bikes and then to train.
At the moment we don't have much clue of a route. I'm thinking of the 140-220 mile mark over 2-3 days depending. Any ideas for a good ride! Looking at the 'normal' C2C route and the Hadrian's Cycleway at the moment but of course open to ideas.

Secondly, how fit are we going to have to be? We both have a fairly decent base fitness level but barely cycle at the moment. Will the summer be enough time to prepare?

Other than that, any other advice? I think we'll have to use panniers rather than having a support vehicle but I can't see that being a major issue.

IF you are reasonably fit, then about 12 weeks, minimum abnd you need to stick to your training plan.

The weight of panniers can be a problem, maybe ot an organised charity ride and let them worry about your gear?
