Starting racing and clubs

I'm looking at having a go at some races.
First off I need to join a club which will probably be Manchester wheelers?
My other issue is how far I will have to travel to get to races.Are there many around Manchester and surrounding areas?
Will all local clubs be able to offer entry into the same races?
I'm a bit on the older side to start racing but I need a push to get my cycling a bit further.
I raced mtb's in the early 90's and had some respectable results, I then discovered beer and that ended my cycling until 3 years ago when I gave up smoking.
Not as fit as I used to be but think I could certainly improve.
