I just been asked if I want to do the 50 mile route of the Ryedale Rumble Sportive.

Firstly, let me mention, I have only done 20 miles on a road bike total.
How much training will i need to fit in between now and 8th August to do 50 miles?

Any hints and tips would be great!

Crikey i just realised i only have 38 days...

Its a gorgeous route - some superb hills.

You need to hit some hills soon, and stick at them. Get used to going up something that takes you 10 - 15 mins.

And, try to do a 50 at the weekends. Don't want to it to be your 1st!

I'm down for the 71 miler Ryedale, however I've not done this sportive before so can't comment on how bad the hills might be

Assuming you're going for a gentle ride and not trying to break a 3 hour barrier, I'd say 2x25 mile training rides per week or 3x15 miles. Make sure you train on some hills. 50 miles is nothing really when you ride with a lot of people about.

The main fitness thing is to make sure you don't get cramp and by doing a regular ride that prevents it.

Carry a full bottle of water or energy drink, a Power gel, jelly babies, an oat bar. That should be well enough as they'll be a feed station as well.

A gentle pace should get you around between 4 to 5 hours.

I done this great ride for the 1st time last year, thought i had trained enough for it, but it got the better of me. There are 2 brutal climbs on this route, boltby bank and blakey ridge, if you haven't prepared for some serious climbing you will be struggling.
Hoping to do it again this year, but got some personal issues to resolve 1st, and since the organiser has stated that due to there not being enough entrants at the moment they are going to decide july 5th weather or not it will go ahead this year, it will be too early a cut off date for me. Hope it goes ahead tho, it is a great sportive.
