Smelly helmet

My helmet stinks (the one on my head). I tend to hose it down after a sweaty ride but think maybe this is not best practice. Any tips? apart from "stop sweating" :?

'sunlight is the best disinfectant'. I leave my helmet with the inside facing up to the sun either outside or at a sunny window - I find that very effective on a day to day basis (assuming its not raining all day of course).

With most helmets you can remove the inner lining and put it through a normal wash.

It might also help to get a light buff scarf to wear under your helmet to soak up the sweat and then wash that afterwards.

The UV can cause degradation of the helmet foam

I leave mine on the patio table for a bit when finished to dry off.

If you put it in a cupboard, wet, then it doesn't dry very well.

I occasionally run the lid under a tap, with a light soap solution and then let it dry outside.

    How old is your lid?

If its more thaan a few years, cut the straps off, bin it.

    Buy a new one

The straps and pads can be removed from the helmet.

I usually just take 'em off while I'm waiting for my dinner to cook one evening and give 'em a quick scrub in hot water in the sink. In this weather they will comfortably dry out by morning.

  • Thanks Guys. The (LID) is only one year old so not going to bin it just yet. I do dry it out in the garden when the suns out, quite a lot of that so far. I have seen sprays that you can get but not convinced that I want a load of chemicals on my head so I'll continue as now.

    On a related note,

Can you get replacement straps? Especially in different colours I was thinking.

    Cheers

What kind of helmet have you got? I sweat like a pig and never wash it but mine still doesn`t smell.

It's a "Giro rift". There is virtually no material inside except some thin strips of sponging attached by velcro. Maybe it's just me thats smelly although I do wash every month whether I need it or not.

Thank god its not just me giggling like a school boy, and I'm 38!!!

On a serious note, how tight do you have your LID!!! Maybe if it's too tight, the ventilation is not working properly. Only a thought?

  • I have it quite tight. I have this idea (not possibly correct) that it needs to be for optimum protection should I fall off? It seems quite well ventilated as helmets (sorry LID's) seem to go. Maybe I need to shave my head but my good lady would go mental as I look like a thug with anything more drastic than a number 4. :?

I don`t think the Giro Rift is particularly well vented, something like an Atmos is a lot better vented so less sweaty. I have a Giro Hex, which is similar to the Rift, and an Atmos. The difference in ventilation is huge.

  • I must admit, I tried on a LID that was around £120 a while ago and I didn't even know it was on my head, it felt like it was made of paper.I feel another trip to the LBS coming on. Oooh how I love spending money on cycling things I don't need but want!
