Bought my bike second hand and it looks as if the bloke has changed from a triple to a double and from a 9 speed cassette to a 7 speed cassette. Is it just a case of changing the gear shifters to match? or do I need a new front and rear derailleur?

    What bike, what gears ?

There was recently a thread on CycleChat where someone had a Raleigh which had 7sp Shimano cassette/mechs and 9sp Campag shifters, which again I assumed to be someone bodging-up a 'bitsa' bike from whatever they had hanging around - but it turned-out this was original equipment spec...

Got any photos of the shifters & rear derailleur? Are the shifters mounted on the drop bars or on the tops?

It is probably cheaper to get a 9-spd cassette than replace the shifters anyway. You won't need to change derailleur, but you will need a 9-spd chain.

Don't have any photos but the shifters are mounted on teh drop bars and are sort of intergrated behind the brake levers

That bike has the exact same rear derialleur and shifters as mine. The shifters need replacing. The rear derailleur is a shimano RD-TY18 which google suggests is for use with a 6 speed not a 7 speed like mine. What is the easiest/cheapest way of resolving this?

    Thanks,

A pic of the shifters and rear mech will help the most.

Is this what the rear mech looks like?

If it is then get this stuff, then you can keep the 9spd shifters and have more gears.

The shifters are Campagnolo Xenon 9 Speed, the rear derailleur is a Shimano RD-TY18 which is the same is the picture you posted. The left hand shifter has snapped so they need replacng or i need a left hand shifter

In that case it depends on what the rear hub is, does it have a brand, or the cassette have a brand name on it?

In that case the minimum you would need to spend to get it changing gear would be any new left hand shifter, like the one in the link below, or to get everything the same and working nicely you will need the Shimano stuff I mentioned earlier, and the pair of shifters here.

It depends on many things. It may have a 7 speed freehub, in which case it will not take a 9 speed cassette (unless modified -using shimano 10 speed sprockets, spacers, and 10 speed shifters). If it does have a 9 speed (or 8 speed) hub, it may be more advantageous to fit a spacing kit to use 8 sprockets spaced for 9 speed Campagnolo shifters.
