Howdy folks, I currently ride a 2010 Specialized Hardrock and have upgraded the fork and the brakes and am now looking at moving on to the drivetrain but i just don't know where to start. I don't even know if I should look to upgrade the frame first or if the drivetrain is a good place to start and if so what make/type of thing should i be looking at.

I mostly ride trail centre stuff, Dalby, Glentress etc.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Why the hell did you buy it in the first place then? If it needed (and you could afford) immediate upgrades, why not spend the extra on a better bike to start with?

I went for the bike that i did purely because i was new to all this and didn't know if i was going to like it or not , turns out i do so am just looking to improve what i have.
  • Well drivetrain wise, there is no point in upgrading if it still works. Get some proper use out of it before upgrading and maybe save for a better bike instead?

You'll also want to change your cassette and chain if you do change your crankset.

Well, look. A new fork, and brakes must have already set you back a pretty penny. Add a decent drietrain to that, and you're pretty much at the price of the bike new.
Do you honestly think that makes sense?

I'd sell it and get a new bike. The Hardrock runs 7 speed gear, and might need new wheels if you want to upgrade. For the price pf upgrading, a new bike makes more sense to me.

Thanks everyone, looks like i'll really have to weigh up my options re upgrading or just going for a new bike. Like I say i'm new to all this and wondered what you guys thought my best course of action would be.

Thanks again for all your input guys, much appreciated.
  • btw... don't think that the bike is going to hold you back/don't feel like you HAVE to change it! It is a very capable bike!

Get some good use out of it, get it dirty, chipped and properly abused! then you'll really appreciate a nice new bike and be a better ride for it!

    ^^THIS.

It just seems silly to upgrade a nearly new bike for no real reason. Replace things with better parts as and when they wear out, or when/if you find a specific weakness.

Upgrading is hugely addictive. If money is burning a hole start looking for another bike!
