MAVIC XC717 Wheels or MAVIC 719

Hi All

I am buying a rear wheel with an XT hub & double butted spokes. I do XC riding with no mad drop offs or nutty jumps etc but will encounter some rocks etc as will be off road.

Which one shall i get? Is the weight difference gbetween them that noticeable? IS the 719 much more robust than the 717? I have an XC717 on the front.
I don't want a chunky rear wheel that weighs a lot (but i'm not a weight weenie either)

Thanks in advance.

I'd get the 717 and match the front wheel - it's plenty tough enough for XC

There's only 40gms difference between these rims (717 = 420gms, 719 = 460gms), so, nothing noticeable! Only real difference on the outside is that the braking surface is better on the XM719, so depends on what brakes you're running as to whether that's important to you.

Also, the XM719 has a slightly smoother internal profile, increasing strength slightly. The prices are near enought the same, so i'd recommend the 719.......there's no real reason, that i'm aware of why you wouldnt - unless you want exactly matching rims....

    Hope that helps.

The 719 offers more support for trail-size tyres (2.25+). I have a pair of 719s on XTs with DT db spokes and they weigh 2kg. Very stiff, very direct, not at all twangy.

I'm running Elixir R brakes. IS it a better fit for tubes & tyre on the XM719 over the 717? I know the 719 is slightly bigger than the 717.
How noticeable is 40g on a wheel? i know it is rotating weight but is it relatively nothing at all?

I'll be running a HT so i wont be hammering crazy downhill stuff so wont go bigger than a 2.3 maximum (if that).

Your 1 wheel weighs 2kg? Not too bad then

    Thanks for the contribution

2 kg for the pair :)

40 g of rotating weight is noticeable. You can get some of it back with lighter tubes and tyres but extra weight on the rims is the very worst place to have it.

HAha yes i'm being a bit thick there with the 2kg weight.

I thought as much regarding the worst place to have the weight. Think i will bite the bullet & get the XC717s. I would rather not have pathetically light tubes as i don't fancy punctures too often.

    Thanks for your advice

to put it into perspective, 40gms is similar to a cheap bottle cage, or a packet of crisps - which ever way you want to look at it! Added the fact that its a rotating weight, like you say, i'd say it was very unoticeable. Even on pretty dry rides, you'll pick up that sort of weight in dirt and crap on the tyre - that's never normally an issue.

I ride a mixture of XC/Freeride and a little more rough stuff so never really watched the pounds too much, but 40 gms can easily be made up with better tyres/tubes.

If you're running Elixir's, why not look into disc only rims? Often a little stronger and lighter......

I have the same wheel build and my reason for choosing the 719s is because of what you said - I like to run wide tyres. The Mavic website lists the maximum recommended tyre width for the 717 as 2.1", whereas the 719 is 2.3".

I am going to get a disc only rim. The 717 is a disc only ri (there is an option for it as disc only) as is the 719 (i believe)

in that case ignore the weights i quoted - they're the rim brake versions....

I havew this exact seme setup and can't fault it at all. Agreed that they are nice and stiff + direct!

The weights are 395g and 460g, so the difference is a little more. The 719 is a touch wider, a bit stiffer and a bit stronger.
