Hi Guys,
Just out of interest, What is the advantage of having extra gears? Say if you were comparing 21 gears to 27?
Is there any disadvantages of having extra gears?
Thanks,
James

Advantage I guess is more choice.
Disadvantage could be more weight, chain wont line up as well with all gears, more expensive to replace.0 -
21 gears sometimes have a frewheel rather than feehub, the latter has better durability.
Most are best avoided.0 -
Sorry SuperSonic, I didn't quite understand that.
Which is best avoided? More or less?

basically they mean bugger all if it is in relation to your other post http://www.bikeradar.com/forum/viewtopi ... highlight= gears wear out and get replaced. but a better frame and fork and wheels for example will stay."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Most 7 speed systems on MTBs are best avoided, as most have freewheels, the weaker system.0

Thanks for all the helps guys!
May I ask what a freewheel is? If the bikes with higher gears don't have a freewheel, what do they have?

Why are MTB economics; spend twice as much as you intended, but only half as much as you wish you could afford? :roll:0 -

There's nothing basically wrong with 7-speed, it's just that these days most of the mtb 7 speed out there isn't particularily good. So it's not the concept or the standard that causes it to be a bad choice, just that the 9-speed kit out there is better.
The other advantage of 9 speed is that it can either have a wider range of gears, or a smaller range but with closer gaps between the ratios.Uncompromising extremist0
