Halifax to Huddersfield- the impossible task?!

Hello!
Does anyone know of any decent commute routes to do from Halifax to Huddersfield? I tried a section of this route today, ending in frustration just after Brighouse after having followed the fantastic route 66 canal path through Elland and into Brighouse. The remaining section looked straightforward on a map, until we got to a 'no cycles allowed' point, where we duly got off our bikes and walked...(!) until we hit an almost impassible section with brambles and nettles (ouch!) and erroded river path. I'm not afraid of offroading- my bike is built for exactly that, but clearly this section is in need of some work to get it up to safe cycling standards, however I felt sure that there must be an alternative route to take and hoped someone out there would be able to give me some suggestions. I was trying to avoid hitting main roads and massive hill climbs....

I regularly commute from Halifax to Huddersfield although I don't avoid the climbing!

Is it just commuting routes your after mate ... ?
I think i know the river route you ar talking about ... and yeah it does need some sorting out ....0
