Watford to the City

My boss has started commuting from Milton Keynes to the City of London (he's
training for an Ironman!). He reckons its fine as far as Watford, but from there on in the roads are pretty dodgy A roads. Has anybody done this commute - any recomendations for route that avoids the major roads?

I'm originally from Watford, but it's been a while...
He could try going Watford > Bushey > Stanmore > Queensbury kind of way, perhaps.0 -
