Newbie - new bike help please?

Hi all,
I have seen the following bikes at a local shop, one is the GT Avalanche 3.0 which is £379 and another one which is a Diamondback Peak HD at £349 but should be £449 but £100 off in the shop.
I dont know much about either of these bikes, or mountain bikes in general really, lol.
Is one make generally known as a better make as I assume the Diamondback has something different/better than the GT if in theory it should be £100 more?!
Are any of these makes considered reasonable or would I be better off looking at something else??
Any advice on either of these makes would be appreciated or if anyone can recommend any others around this price bracket (budget up to about £400).

GT used to be very good, it went through a VERY rough patch and is now OK.
DiamondBack has been around for ages as well and has been well known for its BMX's. However, you also tend to find you get a half decent spec for your money with DiamondBack as you arent paying such a premium for the name.
Not sure of the spec between the two, but you'll find the frame material will more than likely be identical. You'll pay a bit more simply for different spec - the more you pay the better the spec generally.
Out of the two i'd go for the DiamondBack.0
