Well, this will devide opinion I'm sure, but I really like him. Last night he and Messi's missed chances were the best thing about the game. He's a breath of fresh air after the drivel of Jim Beglin and Mark Lawrenson et al. He's dour and funny and couldn't give a toss what people think and anyone who can give this in answer to a question from a reporter re an own goal by his team is OK by me.................

"F*cking abysmal, that was what I f*cking thought of it. C'mon, let's get to it, I'm trying my best here. What did I make of it? I thought it was the best bit of f*cking football I've seen in a long time. Do me a favour. It was a crap start to a game. There you have it, can you print all that? F*cking rubbish, absolute tosh. Drivel. Shite. Bullshit. That's what I thought of it. Did that help? I'm quite pleased, apart from the fact that's given them the poxy result, I'm f*cking livid about it – of course I am. So, there you have it."

Mick McCarthy is from the same part of Ireland as me. County Barnsley.

Great manager though. I always thought the slating he received from the press when Sunderland were relegated was unfair. I mean sure, they were rubbish, but you could hardly blame McCarthy for that. He had virtually no transfer budget, and a bunch of players who had over-achieved in getting promoted in the first place.

I am well aware of that, but which country did he play for- lets see now, that's right- the Paddies

He was the manager, he signed the players, he coached them. It was his responsibility . He has to take the blame

He certainly divides opinion in my pub but I like him. It does take a bit of tuning into his sense of humour but he makes a lot of very valid comments and he makes me smile.

    I don't give a monkey's about his nationality.

I was a bit surprised to see how vitriolic Keano was about MM in his autobiography. Then again, Keano didn't come out of that whole thing looking too great himself.

It was the list of names in OP- all Paddies that made me take notice. I've not watched anything other than 1st England farce so can't comment on opinions of these pundits.

I do remember MM being rather good at breaking jaws when he was a player

Well Mick McCarthy is definitely far better than alot of other co-commentators.

FWIW is think Mark Bright is quite possibly the most useless, boring co-commentator to ever have spoken.

And there's something really wrong with that Colin Murray guy presenting football. Anyone else find him really, seriously, annoying?

his voice reminds me of john shuttleworth.

    He's class.

He said last night " I hope the stadium paint hasnt dried cos it will give the fans something to watch while this boring game is going on".

Because commentary as with journalism is supposed to unbiased. Besides the Irish would have done a better job in the WC than the French. Devine retribution after Henry's vollyball against them.

McCarthy's a bit like Sean Kelly in that he gives a refreshing insight into the sport.

It was a bit rich of him to keep complaining that the Greeks were not attacking enough last night. Wolves scored fewer goals than any other team last season.

Mick McCarthy, can't abide him. Big shame though that Frank Sidebottom of Radio Timperly has just died, he would have made a great World Cup commentator.

Robbie Savage on Radio 5 is a great pundit.

He's like a 10yr old after too much pop - love the genuine excitement and enthusiasm he displays. A breath of fresh air and quite funny too!

McCarthy sounds like he's swallowed a pound of Mogadon.

Bloody taff, why haven't they got an Englishman instead :wink:

I agree, he comments with the same enthusiasm he plays - highlight of the season was when he got hit in the face commenting on a Premiership match a few months ago
