Hi all,

I have seen the following bikes at a local shop, one is the GT Avalanche 3.0 which is £379 and another one which is a Diamondback Peak HD at £349 but should be £449 but £100 off in the shop.

I dont know much about either of these bikes, or mountain bikes in general really, lol.

Is one make generally known as a better make as I assume the Diamondback has something different/better than the GT if in theory it should be £100 more?!

Are any of these makes considered reasonable or would I be better off looking at something else??

Any advice on either of these makes would be appreciated or if anyone can recommend any others around this price bracket (budget up to about £400).

Many thanks

Regards
Rob

i dont know that this is in the right section or not (prehaps buying advice would be better) but here goes.
it depends on what you want to do with it, what kind of riding? do you want to take it to trail centres, use it as a road, or everyday bike?
there are plenty of bikes within that price range from all the big brands, all are pretty similar and will come with standard kit.
however i always reconmend checking out what you can buy second hand, on ebay, or on this forum. not everyone is happy buying second hand, but you can grab some great bargins. you might need a bit more help finding something as there is so much choice. i got my Marin for less than that, for the simple fact that it wa a year old, it would have been double the price new.
but be carefull of people who are just trying to flog their old cr@p
i dont know about those bikes specificaly, but i do know from personal experiance that it is worth looking arround for your first mtb rather than just buying the first thing that your local bike shop sells (as helpfull as your l.b.s can be).

I have posted in the other section now ;-)

I'm not going to be bouncing the thing off boulders/rocks etc, I am just after a reasonable bike for casual use (both on and off road) so it wont get bashed about too much.

I did think about second hand, only thing is you never know what your buying most of the time.

Plus buying new you get to try it, have a warranty, free serviving etc etc.

The Diamnond back has hydraulic disc brakes which is why it was more.

Can my other thread be unlocked and this one locked as my questions may be better responded to in the other forum?

P.S. thanks for the info regarding the brakes
