Hi,

I need a Cheap Tool kit, I'm looking at these two:

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=40997

or

http://www.ukbikestore.co.uk/product/38/82f1/ice-toolz-essence-tool-kit.html

basically I want to know which one you would recomend, or any other suggestions?
My budget is £45 as money is tight :(

Thanks in advance....

You need one that matches what your bike has.

For example if you have HTII cranks there is no point in a crank puller or BB remover...

Well, I've just got a Square taper in at the moment, but I'll be buying a hollowtech II system soon?

Well - look out for a crank puller, correct BB tool and as you're getting a HTII you'll need a shimano external BB tool - about 12 quid for a proper shim one to put it into perspective...

Lidl did one for 15 quid about a month ago, I was surprised how good it was and I'm a real tool snob (my car tools are mostly Snap On).

ive got the x tools one you linked to.

i think its pretty good for the money. so far, ive used to it swap from an ISIS crankset to an SLX (HT2), swap pedals, tighten bearings in the back wheel and a whole load of other stuff. all seems good quality and nothings snapped yet.

one thing though, the splined BB removal tool (the one i needed to remove my BB) didnt fit my RaceFace BB. it was to small. apparently, some (or maybe all?) RaceFace BBs use a slightly larger tool for fitting and removal. LBS sorted that though.

not a major problem, even though that particular tool was no good for my needs, i still think the kit was good value for money.

EDIT - the x tools one also comes with the little plastic tool for tightening crank onto a HTII BB
cant see whether the other one does or not

Halfords have one for £30 and it's not bad. Think it's in the 3 for 2 offer so you can pick up the missing bits cheaply (14mm socket would be good for removing the crank bolts).

Think that one is the same as the Aldi one, which I and someone above think is a pretty decent tool kit. Probably best picking up something like that and buying the odd tool that is specific to your bike.

It was in the buy one get one half price last week, could have made a profit on the other on ebay :D

The X-Tools one actually has both types. External BB tool and Splined type BB tool and Crank Extractor!

Looks a decent deal for a home mechanic to start out with, next time I need to replace a lost or loaned-and-never-returned tool I might just get one of those full sets!

In fact it would be handy for just chucking in the car for weekends away etc rather than a big massive box full of mostly hammers and sockets haha
