Scott Genius 40 and Scale 40, but what else?

Hi folks,
I've really been enjoying riding Dalby's red route (with a few bits of black thrown in) on a Purple Mountain rental bike this year, but now I'm looking at getting my own bike.
I need to decide if I want HT or FS, and will shortly be arranging a test ride on a Scott Genius 40 or 50 and an equivalent Scale. But being a relative newbie, the reams of information at the back of WMB? is somewhat overwhelming.
So... what else should I be thinking about test riding around this price? And would I be better off considering equivalent price HT/FS, or "equivalent" specs and potentially saving some cash?
Any advice for a roadie coming out of the closet would be great!
Many thanks
G

The natural FS equivalent of the Scale is the Spark - they would be the two I'd test.
The Genius is longer travel and heavier, but would probably be easier on the black routes for you.
Testing is the way forward though. What feels best to you is the right choice.0 -
HT or FS can be a very personal thing, test ride both and see what type you prefer. There are advantages and disadvantages to both.
The 2 bikes you mention are designed for different types of riding. The Genius is a bike designed to tackle rougher more technical terrain while the Scale is a XC race bike designed to go long distances fast with maybe slightly less comfort.
So depending on where else you will be riding the bike you may want test ride the Scale, Spark and Genius and the Aspect which is the hardtail equivalent to the Genius.
There are also other bike manufactures to consider. So maybe once you have worked out the right "type" of bike for you, maybe look at similar bikes by other manufacturers?0
