Problem With Cyclo Cable Cutters From Halfords

Good morning all,

I got some Cyclo cable cutters from Halfords last September. Not used them a great deal but now they don't cut the cables cleanly, they just crush it. Now before i go to Halfords (with my recepit) and try to get a replacement, is it just a case of getting them sharpened. I would of hoped that after spending £19 on them they would last more than 9 months.

Cheers

Can't see how that could possibly have happened without them being made of cheese or you've used them to cut hardened steel.

If you've used them according the instructions then there is cleary something wrong that Halfords should sort.

halfords wont do shit. its out of the 28days return policy and there is no guarantee on them. as it happens, i use them in my workshop, have done since around early october last year and have had no issues. i'm damn sure we cut more cables than you.

    try tightening them up.

My experience of cyclo tools is pretty poor to be honest.... I'm not really surprised.

Yeah - get some non-cycling specific cutters - much better value. Some Stanley ones for about £15 spring to mind - they won't let you down.

This is to entirely ignore you legal rights as a consumer. 28 days returns/guarantees are totally irrelevant. Goods need to perform as described.
  • I have sent an email to their customer services, complete with scanned copy of the receipt. Said in email that cutters are crushing the cable instead of cutting. Also accepted on email that older than 28 days but that i expect the tool to last longer than 9 months so i have requested a like for like exchange at my nearest store.

Will let you know when and what reply i get.

    Cheers

I don't know why you don't just go into the shop - assume the best (i.e. that they will see they are faulty and then replace / refund). If they fail then escalate, but I think we should always assume people will do the right thing if given the chance.

I have the exact same cutters, and they've been perfect for 2 years.

Just take them into the shop. They have to change them for you. They aren't fit for purpose, presuming they have only been used for cable cutting and aren't all bent up and busted.

Last time i brought something from Halfords and had to take it back after the 28day g'tee, i was told no, i then asked to see the manager. Funnily enough he wasn't there until monday, so i went to the car put the broken chain cleaner back in the boot and went back into the shop and brought a new one. Went back to the car, picked up the old one and with my new 5 minute old reciept went back in and asked for my money back. No problems, just spoke to different people at different till.

    :D Suckers

28 days my arse the minimum g'tee on any item in halfords is 12 months - 28 days applies to items you just dont want
take em back in with recepit show em the prob you will get a new pair OR refund if you prefer. no need to piss about with emails

Its nothing to do with guarantees, its to do with your legal rights. It doesn't work, they replace it (with a few caveats).

Yup, but 9 months is a long time, that's more than long enough to wear out a semi-decent cutter through regular use so it might not be simple to demonstrate a fault. Cyclo tools aren't generally brilliant but they're adequate, I'd try what Hounslow suggests, if the jaws are loose even the sharpest cutters won't cut.
