OK silly question time!
The yougests Boyfriend will be going to college in September and needs a bike to commute ten miles each way, of course being a student he's broke (budget is around £60 but I will help him out a bit with consumables) and he's asked me to help him out.
At the moment all I can think of is to watch the bay and local rags for a decentish bike going cheap, but would he be better with a better mountain bike built as a commuter such as

or a cheaper road bike like a steel framed apollo? Personally I think quality over concept is the better plan....thoughts?

I'd be careful buying cheap bikes on ebay - can be false economy if you have to spend the same again on bearings, drivetrain and parts.0

Are gears an essential? If not, this may suit. It has the bonus of not needing much upkeep, and probably won't attract thieves.

Indeed SS, but its a risk that has to be taken!
Yes rf6, for the expected commute gears are pretty much essential.
