    What QRs are they?

How tight are you doing it? It should be as tight as possible, whilst still being "openable" with just your fingers.

Erm if there's nothing obviously broken I'd take it to a bike shop or at least try changing the QR , a dodgy front QR is about the scariest thing you can have on a bike...

I have had this - it only happend on my MTB with disc brakes - I would have lost my wheel if it was not for the 'lawyers lips'. It never happened in decades of road biking. I now ensure that my QR is extra tight.

  • they are the specialized own brand QRs that came with the bike. i made CERATIN that they were as thight as possible, but halfway through the monkey trail on cannock chase it was lose again. i always tighten them in the correct manner, and am now thinking that i may need to replace it, as this cannot keep happening.

HUGE THANKS for all the replies, they have been helpful...

Are the treads on the QR intact? Just a thought if the treads are damaged tyhey wont hold tension, can you try another QR?

I dont mean to suggest you are stupid or anything but you do bend the lever over the cam and not just tighten it like a nut and bolt?
  • yeah we do bend the lever over the cam, and on inspection the treads on the QR itself are fine, but the treads on the disc side of the fork are a bit knackered. does this matter a great deal or can it be cured with a new QR?

    please say yes... :?

I had this problem with my front QR. A clix or something like that. I just replaced it with a Shimano Deore one. Not the lightest out there but you can't beat it for design and holds the wheel rock solid.

I can't help with the technical stuff, but please be very careful.....

My OH's front wheel came off on some tame riding a few years ago and he was off the bike for more than 6 months as a result :?

err there should only be threads on one side of the Qr. and that is the end with the acorn nut on it.

Another reson to hate QR, the sooner this crappy road bike tech leaves the MTB arena the better.

The best fix is to get a 20mm front axle, problems gone!
Why would I care about 150g of bike weight, I just ate 400g of cookies while reading this?
  • thanks for the great advice, will defo try a shimano deore QR, as i REALLY do not want that wheel dropping out. thanks again.

ps: any good horror stories of front wheels dropping out?
