Bulging rear tyre

Guys, I wen't out on a 20 mile ride the other day - my furthest yet. I've just gone to use my roller trainer and noticed the back tyre is bulging. I tried to change the innertube but it's made no difference.

Do I need a new tyre?

Also, I'm just under 17 stone, will that mean I should get a 'stronger' tyre or something?

Thanks in advance.

Buy a new tyre before you go for another ride. If it blows out on a ride, you could seriously hurt yourself.

You won't need a special 'strong' one, as the internal pressure only depends on how much you pump the tyre up.

Should I pump it up less being a heavy rider? I usually pump it up to 120psi.

Defintiely a new tyre. Its weakened and started to give, so continuing to use it will end up blowing the tube out of the bulge.

Im 17st too and I run Continental Gatorskins at 110 psi rear, 100 front with no issues.

I would say no, I am 14 stone and pump my back tyre to the max psi and the front 10-20psi less. With cars it's usually recommended that you have more pressure in the tyres with a full load so surely the same applies to bike tyres?

    Yup! those are the ones.

This is a combo deal they do for 2x tyres and decent Conti inner tubes included.

Heavier rider = a bit more pressure. Check the tyre for the max pressure they allow and don't exceed (by much anyway), some tyres show 140psi max, others 110 so there is a fair difference.
I've found a few bulges in tyres and sometimes you're loathe to bin it when there is loads of tread left but it's really the sensible thing to do. New tyre = £20, tyre blowout = ouch (to body and wallet)

    Hi rjh299,

It's the Kenda Kriterium that's the factory tyre on the Defy 3.

    Cheers,

I've just got back from a ride on my Defy 2 which has Kenda Kriterium tyres too and have noticed exactly the same problem.

I noticed a bit of a thudding coming form the rear wheel last week, didn't notice anything with the tyre - thought it was probably wheel related - a loose spoke or a bit of dirt somewhere. Pumped the tyres up today (110 psi) and it was worse and noticed a bulge in the tyre half way into my ride.

for what it's worth i weigh 65kg (about 10st i think), and have been using a pressure of around 110psi.

incidentally there's a thread here talking about upgrading tyres for the Defy

Nice one thinbo, thanks for the info nd good to know it's not just me with this problem. I've actually had a look around and the Kenda's are apparantley rubbish and are only really good enough to get your bike home from the bike shop!

Pretty dangerous if you ask me, needless to say I have the duraskins en-route so I'll hopefully get bette luck with them.

What's frustrating is I'm off and hoped to get in a good few rides but can't use the bike at the moment.

I just wanted to update this post to say that I've got the gatorskins on my Defy 3 and I went out for a swift 15 miler today and it felt great, so uch tackier than the factory tires and generally just felt much better.

Thanks for the help on this.

    Glad you like them!

I feel much more secure and just as fast on Gatorskins compared to the more racey tyres my bike came with. Weighing up the benefits, I think ill stick with the gators for a long time =)
