I've only ever walked the high bits, the gap track is blindingly obvious between the Fans. I've followed routes from Crickhowell into the Black Mountains, eg

It's 22 miles according to the maps, but a full day out on the bike depending on your fitness. Don't underestimate how hard a day in the mountains is (eg do a red route before trying The Gap).
I plugged the route into my GPS and I think it saved a whole lot of messing about with maps, though you could make life easier for yourself by printing out and laminating sections of the map with the route clearly marked. I did a more easterly version of the same area a couple of months ago - hard work, mundane in parts but ultimately a great day out.
pm me if you want GPS logs or anything0
