He used to be one of the must reads in cycling weekly, along with the hilariously creative Johhny Helms cartoons.

Well he's writing on here now.

I used to really enjoy his bit on the back pages of Cycling Weekly
What was the name of his fictional coach?
According to Wiki, it's his birthday on Sunday, so Happy Birthday Tony

That was spelt slightly differently as I recall. I guess I'll have the jingle in my head for the rest of the day !

Oh come on how can you not like the one about the old man on a bike who's wife doesnt want him to go riding

    OR

The one where the wife doesnt want her elderly husband to go riding

    OR

The one where an elderly couple argue about going riding.

    Such hilarity.

    Indeed. Quality!

Who can forget Elderly man riding past wife and her friend, who make a witty derogatory quip about him.

He died a few years back didnt he (Helms) but the cartoons are still there. I think they're afraid to stop them for losing their over 70s demographic ?
  • To be fair the one where the elderly gent was observed by his wife setting out on his own on a tandem added new subtlety to the genre - you can almost see her suspicious brain ticking over!

there was one where an elderly gent on a road bicycle was asked if there were any mountains nearby by a youth on a mountain bicycle. That was good.

I think Tony Bell's brother (Mark?) died about a year or so ago? Tony Bell's main job was as a journo on a regional newspaper so I doubt that the Comic strip he did was his main income stream...
