Threading a gear cable into SRAM red shifter - can't!
Threading a gear cable into SRAM red shifter - can't!
The right side (rear) slid into the gear hole, and popped out the top.
The front mech (left) side wont go. It goes in a bit, and then stops dead. No matter how hard I push, it just warps.
Any ideas???
These are new shifters, taken off a brand new bike...... Using Gore cables.

Is it a new cable? It is notoriously hard with used cables. Google it and there's a few tips on the net. I must admit I now only use new cables as it's so difficult with anything else.0

brand spankers gore professional....
but you do have to cut them at one end.........
anyone got any tips, or had similar issues with sram red??????????0 -
I installed a RED groupset for a mate and the main difficulty was making sure the shifter is in the neutral position (not in a position that would pull of the cable). If the shifter is not in the neutral position, the hole to thread the cable is not clear and hence the cable goes in partway then gets "stuck".
The double tap levers took some getting used to. I would suggest shifting up then making sure it drops all the way back down and then try to thread the cable again.
Basics but it was what stumped me for a bit.
Be careful of the Gore coating on the cables. It frays and looks crap in no time.
Good Luck.

the cable has a sheath to hold it in....
It is the LEFT shifter, so it only moves one up, one down (front ring),
It is down, there can be no ambiguity about what gear it is in (not like the right / rear one)
am i missing something?!!!!0 -

For what its worth - for reference....
I bought a cheap £2 cable from halfords (less wide than the gore coated one), with a sealed end, and used it to thread the hole.
It went in, and cleared a bit of muck and grit in there.
Then, superglued the end of the gore cable at the cut end, and it went in ok

Well done. The coating on the gore cable does seem to make it a tight fit in the lever.0

Had exactly the same issue. Right Lever no problem at all; left lever just wouldn't go through. Brand new Jagwire Cables. I resolved it by removing the side cover, pressing the shift lever all the way to the left, to give a good view of the cable guide channel, whilst still with the lever pressed fully to the left, thread the cable through the hole in the red cam, then, with the cable slight bent at the end, thread it in to the cable channel. Pull all the way, release the lever and ensure the mechanism returns to its closed position, then replace the cover.
Hope this helps anyone with a similar problem0 -
Never had a problem with Force or Red, but did have a problem with two different Rival sets. I found a quick squirt of WD40 on the cable and in the aperture got the cable through.I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.0

Feel your pain, but during my latest rebuild using SRAM RED 2012 shifters I used a pair of pliers to help get some more purchase on the cable without it bending.
Its still not a perfect solution but there were far fewer failed attempts, hope this helps....
