Hi guys noob here. I'm Chris from Warrington.

Haven't rode a MTB for 12 years but decided to go back to my roots and get fit.
Just been and picked up this

Guy bought it brand new 2 weeks ago and has now been hit with divorce , never rode it... still got nobbles on tyres. I got it for £720.. sought through Ebay.

Sadly i'm recovering from a hernia op so cant use it yet.. cant wait though!
Was used to rapid fire plus.. back in the day... this sram stuff will take some getting used to!

Hey Chris, welcome to the forums!

Lovely bike, great spec even for the RRP.. even more amazing for what you paid and the condition!! :D Good work!

Fantastic bikes, the Boardmans, you won't be disappointed when you're all healed and riding!

And yup, hope you get better soon mate, just keep staring at the bike, that'll give you an incentive to recover faster!!

I know i shouldn't be out on it yet as still in recovery....
The Bike has been sat in my front room since picking it up, calling to me like a siren but i'd resisted. Then yesterday i couldnt hold out anymore and took her out for a short 40 min ride to my local Lymm Dam

Sorry for the quality, taken from Iphone

I cant get over how light it seems to me.. nothing like my old xc bike i used to race. Feel like i can throw it around. Quite liking the SRAM shifters too, not at all as bad as i first thought . Really need to get the suspension set up for myself.. finding im nearly blowing through the rear travel.

Will be looking for some new grips soon as the standard ones are a little thin and harsh on the wrists and even though its only 3-4 weeks old i'm gonna be sending her in for a service as im not convinced the Halfords techs have put her together properly.

All in all im quite impressed with it.. 12 years away is a long time and my legs and lungs aint what they used to be but in time i hope to get some of them back. I had to stop part way through the ride at a park bench and look out over the dam and i said to myself

    "God i've missed this"

Glad to see you're finally out on the bike, i'm itching to get my new build together and ride it, not ridden for about 6 weeks now! It's a great feeling though when you do get out on the bike though eh? :D Cracking price on that by the way!

With regards to the rear suspension, it's an air shock, so all you need to do is get a shock pump (£30) and pump it up to the correct pressure for your weight (there should be a weight/psi table on the rockshox website). Same goes for the forks i do believe.

    Happy riding!

Glad you're enjoying your return to riding!

You've picked yourself a bargain in that Boardman of yours! You might be interested in watching The Commute. It's nothing incredible, but some nice footage of the Boardman in action at Cwmcarn (and it's available in 3D too).

    Get well soon :)

Had my FS Comp for 9 months now, bent the middle front chainring, snapped the chain, numerous punctures. I ride it like I sole it daily, still going strong. great bike really pleased with it.

    Just seen this post.
I too have a Boardman Team FS. Now 9 weeks old. It's a great bike.
Uprades so far: Bontrager Mud-X tyres, Halfords comfort saddle (I found the Boardman way too hard), Bikehut flat performance peddles.
Also fitted Cycraguard mudguard set and a Mucky Nutz Bender Fender 2.0.

I keep buying stuff every week. This MTB is so expensive. Still getting sooo much fitter and loosing weight already.

  • I've had mine a while now and the only thing i've done is stick on some Lizard skin ODI grips..

I hear what your saying about the saddle though.. will look into that next.

I've lost a stone and a half so far with this baby... really loving it... another stone to go and i'll be happy!

I forgot to say, I've also swapped the grips for Ergon GP1's. These are brilliant.
I need to loose at least two stone and so far this biking lark is working. Off out tonight for my first night ride. Borrowing a light, so that will be my next purchase.

  • Well it's been quite some time since i last posted and for my sins .. and work i've not really used the bike as much as i'd of liked but starting to find my love for it again. Not really done a massive amount to her since last year...

Added a crud catcher, two rear ebay special blue anodised QR's (needed to use a rear on the front becasuse of the maxle), Gub blue QR seat clamp and replaced the rings on my lizard skins with blue ebay specials.

Got some cash coming my way so next it'll be seat change and some nobby nics going on and possibly might stick some floating rotors on. Toying with the idea of a 2nd hand Fox RP23 HV as i'm finding this shock is going through too much travel even at 210psi (i am fairly heavy)

First things first though.. in Jan she's going in for a full strip service as it's not had one since Halfords built her (no problems as of yet though).

Hoping to get up to Llandegla after new year as i'm getting rather bored ofthe flats around Warrington.

My Team FS is now 14 months old and I've already worn out all the main bearings. I've had to change the front hub bearings, then just recently the bottom bracket and rear hub bearings. Wow its like a new bike with the rear hub bearings. I hadn't realised how bad they were - it was like riding with the breaks on.
I've also had a do an air can service on the rear shock which fixed the air leak I'd had since it was a couple of months old. One of the seals had a twist in it.
    Overall, a great bike.

I too am thinking about taking apart all the suspension joints to clean/grease them. The winter riding is taking its toll. But I tried one but it was too stiff to undo and was ruining the hex head.

    Why the change of shock?

  • I wanted something that had anti pedal and the Monarch 3.1 was a bit shy of features. I wasn't sure what to go for so did a bit of research and asked about and the RP23 seemed top of the list.

Let me know if you notice a difference with your new wheels, as this would be my next upgrade as I keep buckling my front wheel and I think a upgrade is now due.

  • Got the bike out for the first time since it's additions today... nothing major just a hit round the local dam and surrounding trail (and being shouted at for unknowingly being on a farmers private land).

WOW!! the RP23 has transformed the back no end so much more responsive over the Monarch 3.1. Pro pedal is a god send too.

Charge spoon is like velvet clouds under my a**e cheeks compared to the standard boardman altough this may of been helped by a set of these http://www.decathlon.co.uk/short-3-black-grey-id_8126229.html bargain.

80mm stem has transformed the front over the standard 100mm , i feel i have the right amount/speed of control now... did start feeling a bit of pain in my hand and wrist which i hoped wasn't from the new grips but after dropping the seat a touch it went away.

Mud clearance wasn't brilliant from the Nobby nics but to be fair some of the trail was just utter Bog. They were quite sideways on some greasy roots but i thought that was more my riding than the tyre. Didn't really subject the XC-430's to too much so cant really question them although combined with the nobbys i felt more confident and composed on the bike.

All in all VERY happy with the bike now, feels more suited and personalised to me. I've not been using her much over xmas due to my redundancy/head f**k but its like a new lease of life and it felt great getting muddy again.

    Now time to clean her.
