Who Said Cycling Was Cheap?

It started with a new bike.

I wanted a Colnago - expense
I wanted Campagnolo to go with the Colnago - expense
I needed new cycling clothing - expense
Then I discovered quality clothing - more expense
New and better tyres made cycling more enjoyable - expense
Then I booked a trip to Mallorca - no expense, bloody volcano
But I had got a bike case for the trip - expense
Then I spent the weekend for the Caledonia Etape - expense
Then I "needed" a Garmin 705 - more expense

Then, at the weekend I was told that due to all my cycling I have lost that much weight that I need a whole new wardrobe! 8)

Not a complaint. Just an observation. :P
Someone has to keep this Country afloat

I suppose it can be cheap but we're all bitten by the bug eventually.

It's as cheap as you want to make it.

Ride an old steel fixed, ditch the 11 speed carbon, wear 'normal' clothes. I know a few people who have a great time riding audax for as little outlay as possible and others who are Rapha'd and Super Recorded to the eyeballs who don't do anywhere near the same mileage but still have fun.

building a cheap one for the GF at the moment, well I say cheap.... she insists on paying her way for it... she can pay for the parts I bought for it but a few are parts from my bike from upgrades.... aint telling her that shes paying a lot less than has been paid because I like the idea of her thinking its a nice cheap hobby

There is no pulling the wool over your partner's eyes - they know its expensive, just dont let on all the time - besides she has seen the insurance premium!

you could blow your money on fags booze and women - so which would she prefer?

M&S Insurance. You don't need to itemise anything less than £4000 :P

If your bike is worth more than £4000 chances are she knows it's expensive. Maybe not how much, but she will be aware it is not a Halfords special.

It's cheap when you have to make it cheap. I didn't have to buy that £60 computer, I didn't have to buy that set of lights, I didn't have to buy those specific name bottles when I could get same, non-name for 50p each. Cycling gear is over inflated in price.

We do because we want not because we need.

I went to buy 2 inner tubes so off to my main LBS, asked if they could do me 2 tubes for £5. No, they could do them for 7 but not 5. Fairy nuff they have a profit to make. I bought one and headed to another LBS; £2.50 per inner tube... Just the same, did the job and around a pound cheaper! I don't understand why some shops are so much cheaper than others. I bought my cycling bibs for £25 and they're awesome, yet similar bibs from Scott cost nearly 80 quid! We paying for a printed name here?

My Karrimor cycle jerseys cost me 8 quid, they're very well made, comfortable and do exactly the same as the £30+ jerseys I see in my local bike shops. Yes I accept sometimes we pay for better quality, but the mark ups are insane.

Back when I worked for River Island I witnessed their mark up strategy first hand (bear in mind this was in 1999). One of their £100 suits would cost me, an employee, £25! The girl who hired me said that their typical mark up was around 60-75%, but their clothing was mostly under their own label. Oh and yes I did get off with the woman who hired me, think that was the only reason I got the job...
