Smaller front sprocket, will it make much difference?

Currently i am running the shimano alfine internal gear hub and have a single 32 tooth shimano slx sporcket on the front. i have used it on a few big rides and it is a monster on the uphills. I tend not to go all the way up to the 8th gear on the alfine and usually stay around gear 6 when going downhill. if i was to get a 28 tooth spocket would this make a significant difference at either the top end or the bottom end? or if not what size could you recommend that would make things a little easier without losing too much at the top?
Cheers

Alfine gear ratios are:
0.53, 0.64, 0.75, 0.85, 1, 1.22, 1.42 and 1.62
Have a read here on the maths so you can tailor your requirements.
