Buy or Upgrade

I've been enjoying my return to cycling quite a bit. Naturally, this has lead me to looking at what I ride, a 2004 GT Avalanche 1.0, and wondering what to do with it next. (if anything)
My options are thus:
Buy
My company does a cycle to work scheme, but I can't realistically actually cycle to work at the moment. I'd also consider a previous year model if it was the right bike.
Upgrade
Keep riding what I have but maybe look at replacing the wheels, fork and upgrading to cable discs at some point in future (frame has mounts). I love the frame on my GT with it's better than the current model paint job finish. I just don't want to risk throwing good money after something which is essentially now 6 years old.
Break
Just carrying on riding my current bike until bits break.
I suppose the real question is, has the technology moved on significantly enough since 2004 to actually bother replacing the whole bike.
Any opinions?

No, I'm still riding a 2005 model year bike with 2004 forks (albeit Pace ones) and it's still more than capable of keeping up with and even outdoing current bikes from a similar price range.
If the frame is disk compatable and the geometry suits you, there's no reason not to upgrade it piece by piece and continue using it for years to come.0 -
You make a fair point.
I can see the frame lasting years and I love the way it looks.
Very easily swayed by the shiny shiny in the bike shops, but I have a decent enough base.0 -
