I have a bke with SRAM Rival with a 50/34 compact front cassette and Shimano 12-25 rear

Not quite ready to jump up to a larger front cassette, i am spinning out at about 27mph on the flat but still struggle on the steep hills..would an 11-28 on the rear be easier and presumbly a new chain

it'll be easier, and the 11 will also help on the flat/downhill

yep, new chain, and follow sram's instructions for the rear derailleur (on their website) to set it up for the cassette and get the chain length right

btw if you put 11-28 on, then later fit a 53/39, then you'll end up with the lowest gear just a few % harder than you have now, but if by then you have developed more it'll be ok

 i only reach 27mph down hill.

Forget the rear cassette, you need a standard front chainset.

Thanks, not sure I understand the cycling jargon

I don't have a cadence monitor but I much prefer to churn the miles out on the big cog than a smaller cog and more revolutions

I think you need a slightly higher cadence. I run 52 on the front (I have a triple) and 12-28 at the back. I find I'm spinning out down very steep hills above 35mph doing about 100ish rpm.

Rather than get a whole new crankset you might just be able to buy new chainrings. If you can do 27 on the flat you really should be running a 53 up front.

I'm thinking of going to an 11-28 at the back but to be honest the only times I'd need it are going downhill or when I have a really strong tail wind. As I don't race I'm probably better to stick with what I have rather than modify the bike for a very rare set of circumstances.

Seriously dont spend any money on bits.. learn to pedal faster.....

I have a 48/34 and 13/26 and can reach 35mph on the flat.....

after abour 40 mph going downhill i dont pedal. anymore....

    Dave.
  • I run a 50/34 with 25/11 cassette and have never spun out on the flat. I can pedal/sprint at 35+ mph. You need to turn the cranks faster. 100 - 110 will easy get you up to speed.
