grips and stems

Hello there, when i ride i get quite sore hands, i think i grip too hard. I'm wondering if new grips would help and if so what type? i'm looking at superstar lock ons at the mo as they're nice and cheap but not sure how comfy they will be.
I am also in need of a shorter stem, i have an 09 carrera fury and the stem is very long. Having said that, i am getting used to it now. Even so, are there any recomendable stems for a low price worth looking at?
thanks.

What grips have you currently got? Do you use gloves?
I have a set of superstar grips and they feel comfy enough although my ODI Yeti's were nice and soft and very grippy!0 -
i do wear gloves and i have stock grips that are very thin.0

+1 for superstar lock on grips.
as for stems, i have an FSA OS190, in 100mm, but it come in many shorter sizes too, but it does need an oversize bar,0
