Reading some of these here bike tests, I was reminded about how in the 70s motorcycle news always gave the best road bike tests to the norton commando (and bike of year for several years). This was above the hondas and yamahas etc which were decimating the home market as people who used the japanese models knew how superior they were especially in reliability and build quality.
It turned out that Norton had a special dept that prepped all the press bikes, so the ones that were reviewed bore little comparison to the ones that joe public bought.
im sure that bicycle manufacturers dont do the same ....but thinking about the bike i last bought im now not sure hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
