I'm picking up my Rockhopper tomorrow and I was wondering if anyone could advise on some beginner routes in the South Lakes/ Kendal area. I live in Staveley and I'm aware of the Kentmere route, but anything else (short, long, easy, technical) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve

We actually took my class of Primary School children to Grizedale mountain biking a couple of months ago, which is what got me back into biking again after a gap of 15 years or so! We mainly did the fire tracks and a couple of legs of the North Face Trail (which I really enjoyed) with the more able kids - I'll definitely go back.

Bit of a drive south but Gisburn has a good blue route. Just don't come today as there's an event on.
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result

I went out this morning - just a quick ride to bed in the brakes and try it out. I found a bit of a downhill rocky track and anjoyed that! Then the rain came...

I've been out a few times from Staveley towards Kentmere. I bought myself an OS map and just planned routes along the bridleways (of which there are loads) and just set off, seeing where they took me! I've really enjoyed it, and most of the terrain has been fine for me (although I've met a couple of tricky bits that I couldn't really do. I had a good laugh trying though!) Here are some pics of my first 3 bike rides (I apologise if people think they are too big - I'm new to photo hosting so feel free to delete them, or ask me to, is you think they are)

Brand new bike - ridden for about a mile!

Same place as the above photo, but with a better view.

Taken at about 9.30 pm earlier this week after the kids were in bed and it had been raining all day!

    As above.

This sheep tried to stare me out, but it soon ran off after I hurtled towards it.

I couldn't stop laughing as I went down this bit - I found it quite tough!

These are all pleasant photos of somewhere between Staveley and Kentmere:
